Brief Description of Activity

1

Participation in career days and job fairs

1…On Thursday, September 23, 2010, Account Executive Cory Post represented Redding Radio at the Business Expo/Job Fair sponsored by the Greater Redding Chamber of Commerce at the Redding Convention Center.  On duty in our decorated booth, Cory presented attendees with information about careers in radio broadcasting and answered their questions.

2.  On January 28, 2011, KRDG Program Director Rachel Lane hosted a local Brownie Troupe here at Redding Radio.  The Brownies and their chaperones were escorted through each of the 6 studios and given descriptions of the stations.  Rachel also conducted them through the other areas (Production, Engineering, Business Offices, etc.) to show all the different types of jobs one could have in this industry.  She then conducted a question/answer session with the young people about all aspects of radio broadcasting.

3.  On May 10, 2011, KQMS News Anchor Kelly Frost and KRDG Program Director Rachel Lane participated in Anderson New Technology High School’s “Job Shadow” day.  Each had students shadowing them at work that day.  The 3 students were introduced to the radio business by a brief introduction to the sales and business departments, and extensive explanation of programming.  During programming shadowing, the students were taken on air, participated in phone calls and contests, learned about music and talk scheduling, and participated in news gathering for on-air delivery.

4.  On March 9, 2011, Account Executive Cory Post served on the Redding Chamber of Commerce Business Expo committee.  Redding Radio hosted a booth where our staff members displayed information on broadcasting employment and provided explanations of types of jobs available in radio to prospective job seekers.

Training for Employees

Redding Radio has ongoing training for all personnel to allow them to grow within their positions and enable them to qualify for higher level positions should they choose to do so.

The sales persons are put through basic sales training.  In addition, they receive ongoing training in sales techniques and methods.  This includes weekly, monthly and quarterly training events. This training enables sales staff to gain the skills necessary to advance through the Redding Radio organization, and also allows them to gain the skills to move up to larger markets and positions them for management opportunities.

All departments practice cross-training, in order to prepare for future opportunities.  Redding Radio also supplies employees with specific scheduled trainings with Arbitron and RAB as well as outside training classes.

On May 19, 2011, we held a 2-hour training session on “Prevention of Workplace Harassment”.  It was conducted by a certified trainer, Linda Cadd of Cadd Consulting.  All employees who supervise anyone, or are “perceived to have power” were required to attend.

3

Participation in community events

Approximately once a month, our staff conducts station tours for Boy Scout Troops, school classes, classes of handicapped adults, car clubs, and other groups, introducing them to all the career possibilities in radio.

Internship Program

The Redding Radio internship program has been an effective tool for us to find and train young individuals who are interested in a career in radio broadcasting. Each semester we invite individuals from the Shasta College Internship program, through the Communications Department, to apply for a Redding Radio internship. We then select up to 4 interns based on their availability and willingness to be the best radio professional they can be. Interns learn the basic skills it takes to have a career in radio broadcasting. They start out learning how to run a mixing board for live broadcasts, setting up live broadcasts, voicing commercials and finally… how to become an on air jock. If interns prove they can master all of the basics of radio broadcasting they can apply for employment. They will have a clear advantage over other applicants based on the experience they receive during the internship… and we have hired several interns over the past few years with positive results. We plan to continue our internship program for the foreseeable future. It really is the best way for individuals to find out if they have what it takes to compete in this fast-paced industry and may help us find our next radio superstar!
